Block Instagram until you move

A practical setup

Select Instagram in Apple’s app picker and set the movement goal that will open your day. Keep communication or work apps outside the selection, decide on a step or saved-place option for the days that need one, and run a short test while you can still inspect the setup.

Worked example

Select one destination, set a 5-minute daily limit, then test locking and release while every permission and exception is still visible. Leave a step, saved-place, or unrestricted option available whenever the context requires it.

Apple’s picker selects the whole Instagram app, not its feed and messages separately. Decide whether direct messages are essential enough to leave Instagram outside the rule; if they are, choose another distracting app for the first experiment. If you select Instagram, test the complete app boundary with one short daily limit and record any necessary communication that the selection also catches.

How to measure the experiment

For seven days, compare automatic attempts to open Instagram with visits you planned. Note whether the shield appears consistently, whether messages remain reachable as intended, and whether the open day ends at a sensible point.

Confirm the selected app, essential exceptions, movement goal, daily limit, and a short verification session before treating the rule as part of your routine.

• ✓Check app and browser routes that reach the same destination.
• ✓Choose a way in that fits the place and time: a camera-counted exercise, the step target, or a place you name.
• ✓Run one short shield-and-unshield test before relying on it.

When to adjust the rule

If useful conversations are caught by the rule, change the selection before changing the movement. If visits still run longer than intended, set a daily limit or a no-go window rather than making the session harder.
