A practical setup

For Chrome, decide which use is distracting, which use is intentional, and whether another app or browser route performs the same task. Use an ordinary weekday for the first run so the result is not shaped by a special event.

Worked example

Select one destination, set a 15-minute daily limit, then test locking and release while every permission and exception is still visible. Leave a step, saved-place, or unrestricted option available whenever the context requires it.

Chrome selection applies to the whole browser rather than to chosen websites. Before shielding it, inventory the concrete browser-only jobs on your iPhone: identity checks, banking hand-offs, school portals, work dashboards, ticket links, travel changes, password resets, and support pages. Open each essential workflow once and confirm a dependable alternative, such as Safari or the provider’s app, without assuming saved sessions or passkeys transfer. Then run a short Chrome test while calls, maps, payments, and authentication remain reachable. Record every necessary link caught by the shield and every distracting site reached through another browser. If mixed duties dominate, leave Chrome available and target narrower destination apps instead of pricing access to the web as a whole.

How to measure the experiment

For 14 days, record 4 checks covering shield reliability, necessary access, planned visits, and automatic openings. Note apps locked by mistake, bypasses, and successful intentional sessions as three different outcomes.

Before you switch it on

A blocking playbook is useful only when selection, recovery, and essential access have been tested.

• ✓Inventory work, care, banking, travel, and authentication needs.
• ✓Check app and browser routes that reach the same destination.
• ✓Choose a way in that fits the place and time: a camera-counted exercise, the step target, or a place you name.
• ✓Run one short shield-and-unshield test before relying on it.

When to adjust the rule

Fix the selection before raising the movement target; a broader lock is not automatically a better boundary. Make the rule gentler when it catches necessities and firmer only when the current pause has disappeared.
