A practical setup

For YouTube, decide which use is distracting, which use is intentional, and whether another app or browser route performs the same task. Change the environment or app selection before increasing the effort required.

Worked example

Select one destination, set a 15-minute daily limit, then test locking and release while every permission and exception is still visible. Use the same setup on calm and tired days before drawing a conclusion.

Apple’s picker applies the rule to the whole YouTube app, so instructional and entertainment videos cannot be separated inside that selection. Inventory the planned viewing that must stay available before choosing the app. You may leave YouTube outside the first rule, use a different destination, or accept that every opening shares the same open day during the limited trial.

How to measure the experiment

For 21 days, record 4 checks covering shield reliability, necessary access, planned visits, and automatic openings. A difficult day is useful evidence, but it should not decide the whole experiment by itself.

Before you switch it on

A blocking playbook is useful only when selection, recovery, and essential access have been tested.

• ✓Inventory work, care, banking, travel, and authentication needs.
• ✓Check app and browser routes that reach the same destination.
• ✓Choose a way in that fits the place and time: a camera-counted exercise, the step target, or a place you name.
• ✓Run one short shield-and-unshield test before relying on it.

When to adjust the rule

Fix the selection before raising the movement target; a broader lock is not automatically a better boundary. Change either the action or the boundary at one review, never both together.
